Getting the WhatsApp Green Tick in Nepal: What Meta Actually Requires

Dibi Tech · · 4 min read

The green tick on WhatsApp is Meta's official business verification badge, and it cannot be bought. Meta grants it based on whether your brand is notable — meaning it is covered in credible news sources you do not control. Most Nepali businesses will not qualify at first, and that is normal rather than a failing.

What the green tick actually is

A green checkmark beside your business name in the chat header and contact list, telling customers that Meta has confirmed this is the real business and not an impersonator.

It is worth separating from two things it is often confused with:

  • Business verification — Meta checking your company documents. Required to use the API properly, achievable by any registered business, and completely separate from the green tick.
  • A display name — the business name shown on your messages. You get one once your name passes Meta's naming rules. It is not the tick.

You can send, receive and run a full WhatsApp operation without a green tick. Many established Nepali businesses do.

What Meta actually requires

The decisive criterion is notability. Meta looks for evidence that your brand is significant enough to warrant protection from impersonation, and the evidence it accepts is coverage in credible, independent news sources.

What counts: articles about your business in recognised news outlets, written by journalists, that you did not pay for.

What does not count, no matter how much of it you have: your own website, your social media accounts, paid advertisements, sponsored content, press releases you issued, directory listings, or blog posts you commissioned.

That distinction is the whole thing, and it is why most applications from Nepal are declined. It is not a judgement about your business quality. It is a test of third-party coverage.

Alongside notability you must have completed Meta business verification and have a WhatsApp Business Account in good standing — quality rating not low, no recent policy violations.

Why most Nepali businesses are declined first time

Not because the business is small or new, but because the application was submitted with the wrong evidence. A typical rejected application offers the company website, a busy Facebook page and a paid advertorial. None of those are independent coverage, so notability is not established and the application fails on its stated criterion.

A declined application is not permanent. You can apply again once the underlying picture has changed.

How to build a genuine case

If the tick matters to you, the work is public relations rather than paperwork.

  • Earn real coverage. Nepali business and technology press do write about companies doing something newsworthy — a funding round, a genuine first, a significant partnership, a notable milestone. The story has to be real.
  • Make sure the coverage is editorial, not paid. An advertorial marked as sponsored will not help, and submitting several of them weakens rather than strengthens the application.
  • Collect the links. Keep a list of independent articles that name your business, with dates.
  • Get business verification done first. It is a prerequisite and it is entirely within your control.
  • Keep your quality rating healthy. A number with a poor rating will not be approved regardless of coverage.

Whether it is worth pursuing

Honestly, for most businesses: not as a priority.

The tick helps most where impersonation is a live risk and where customers are being asked to trust you with money — banks, remittance, large e-commerce, ticketing. If someone is likely to set up a fake account in your name, the tick is genuinely protective and worth real effort.

For a clinic sending appointment reminders, a shop confirming orders, or a school messaging parents, customers already know who you are because they initiated the relationship. Your verified display name appears on every message either way. The operational gains from replying quickly and writing good templates will do more for you than the badge.

Our advice is usually to get business verification done, run the channel well, and revisit the tick when you have genuine press coverage — by which point the application tends to succeed on its own merits.

Questions we get asked

How do I get the WhatsApp green tick in Nepal?

Complete Meta business verification, maintain a healthy account, and apply when your business has genuine coverage in independent news sources. Notability is the deciding factor.

Can I pay for the green tick?

No. Anyone selling one is selling something they cannot deliver.

Does my business need the green tick to use WhatsApp Business API?

No. It is entirely optional and unrelated to functionality. Your verified display name shows on messages regardless.

My application was rejected. Can I reapply?

Yes. Rejection is not permanent. Reapply once you have independent press coverage you did not pay for.

Is the green tick the same as the verified business name?

No. The display name comes from passing Meta's naming rules. The green tick is a separate notability decision.
